The Doghouse is a badass red dirt band from Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Doghouse is a three-piece band; members are Caden Brewster on lead vocals and guitar, Cayston Avery on drums and backup vocals, and Kurt Doenges on bass and backup vocals!
When did everyone first start playing music, and what drew them to it? They all started playing music at different ages. “Kurt started playing when he was young, in piano lessons, and eventually he transitioned into guitar, banjo, and eventually bass. Caden started playing guitar in his early teen years and has taught himself how to play guitar and other instruments since then. Cayston had always had music in his veins but didn’t start playing drums until the band formed. Since then, he has grown and worked to be where he is today as a musician. It’s safe to say that we all have been drawn to music since day one, though, by the community and the feeling of making good music.
How would the band describe their sound to someone who’s never heard The Doghouse before? They said, “Describing a band’s sound is always so hard to do, but if we had to, we would say that we make grunge/ alternative rock music that has a southern feel and down-to-earth lyrics. We love to write things that people can relate to and can truly feel. But we can’t let go of that grunge attitude and the alt rock energy!”
Who or what inspired the band to start making music? “We all have such vast music tastes that inspired us separately, and we had thought about creating music on our own, but when we moved to Stillwater and saw the community around us and the abundance of music, we knew that we had to do something to make our own slice in it, so we started jamming in Cayston’s garage and eventually made “The Doghouse” and the band we are today.”
Who are some artists that have influenced each member the most? Well,
“Cayston is the metalhead of the group but has influences from Slipknot all the way to the Beatles. Kurt is the most well-rounded member of the group, with influences from literally all genres. Caden grew up on alternative rock and country! Red Dirt and has been influenced heavily by bands like Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots, to the OG Red Dirt bands like The Great Divide and Cross Canadian Ragweed. It’s safe to say that everyone in the band has taken their own route to where they are, but they have all ended up on the same common ground.”
What’s been their favorite show or venue to play so far? They said, “That is a very tough one. We’d have to say in between Grady’s Pub and Filthy McNasty’s Saloon during the World Series.” But what’s their dream venue to play at? They said, “It would be a dream to play some of the legendary venues like Cain’s Ballroom, Billy Bob’s, Red Rocks, and The Ryman”
What has been a major turning point in the band’s career so far? They said, “We took a big step when we started to write original music, because we had only ever learned covers, and we didn’t really think that we would become an original band until the first song was written. But once we started writing, it was game on, and we started taking everything a lot more seriously.”
What’s something about the band that people might not expect? They said, “Everyone in the band actually works together outside of the band. It’s a blessing and a curse because we are always with each other, but we are also stuck with each other 24/7.”
What does the band hope people feel or take away when they hear their music? They said, “We hope that people can relate to our music more than “just another song” and build a connection with our community and us.” Now what does success look like for them in music? They said, “Success for us is to make a living making music that people can enjoy and that we enjoy.”
How does the band balance music with the rest of their life? They said, “Music is a whole job in itself, but whether it’s spending only a certain time of the day on music or sticking to our band practice schedule. We all find our own different ways to balance our lives with the band and still give everything we’ve got when we get on stage or in the studio.”
What’s one piece of advice they’d give to someone just starting out in music? The band said, “Don’t be afraid to start. We spent a lot of time just jamming in the garage because we didn’t know if we’d make it, but since we’ve taken the first step, we haven’t looked back, and we’re not gonna stop!”
What about upcoming releases? “Our debut single “Set You Free” just released today; you can find it everywhere and stream the shit out of it! We’ve got more where that came from, with some more new singles in the next few months, so stay tuned! P.S. If you wanna sneak peek at our next songs, you’ll just have to come to a show!”
