Hoss Miller is a singer-songwriter from Pawnee, Oklahoma. Hoss describes his sound as “Gritty red dirt with a touch of southern rock.” I’ve seen Hoss live once, and he puts on a great show. I highly suggest seeing him as soon as possible!
Now, what drew Hoss to music? He said, “I’ve always loved to sing. From a young age, music felt like a natural way to express myself, and I found that songs could communicate feelings and experiences in ways that words alone sometimes couldn’t. I’ve also always had stories to tell, and music gave me a creative outlet to share those stories, connect with people, and bring emotions and experiences to life.”
What inspired Hoss to start making music? He told me, “The biggest inspiration for me to start making music was losing my grandma. When she passed away, I wrote my first song/poem as a way to process my emotions and express what I was feeling. Writing helped me cope with the loss, and seeing how powerful it was to put my thoughts and feelings into words inspired me to keep going. From that moment on, songwriting became a way for me to tell my story, work through life’s experiences, and connect with others through music.”
What’s been Hoss’s favorite show to play? He said, “The Wormy Dog in Stillwater. The nostalgic feel of it and being able to headline after the Boys from Oklahoma concert had an unforgettable atmosphere, as well as crowd participation,” but what’s his dream venue? Hoss said, “Just like any other artist, I think Red Rocks is the pinnacle of places to play”
What’s been a major turning point in Hoss’s career so far? He said, “One was getting a band full of some great guys and practicing to be able to do what we do. Another is being fortunate enough to be able to sign with my manager at Desperado Music.” What’s something about the band people might not expect? Hoss said, “We all have full-time jobs.”
What does Hoss hope people feel when they hear his music? He said, “I hope they get chills. The lyrics I write tend to cut deep and are relatable to a lot of people, whether it be them personally or someone close to them.” What does success look like for him? Hoss told me, “Being able to fill a room and hear people sing the songs I’ve written back to me.”
How does Hoss balance music with the rest of his life? He said, “It’s tough; my kids aren’t allowed in most venues, so of course I miss them. I’ve also had to make a couple of job changes to make it possible for me to chase this dream.” What’s one piece of advice Hoss would give to someone just starting out? Hoss said, “Don’t stop. Not all songs you write will be good, and never be too hard on yourself; progress is a beautiful thing.”
What about upcoming music? Hoss told me, “I was fortunate enough to be able to bring my daughter into the studio to have a part in a song I’ll be releasing in the near future. I have a few more songs lined up to be recorded as well!”
