This week’s artist spotlight is on one of my favorite up-and-coming artists based out of Oklahoma. One thing you’ll realize is that we’re really trying to introduce people to these up-and-comers to make you an early fan and put you on to some new music to add to your playlist. Now, who’s this week’s artist? A singer-songwriter named Reece Colin.
Reece Colin is a singer-songwriter based out of Edmond, Oklahoma, who first started writing and playing in his senior year of high school, saying that “the collective sounds of Ryan Bingham, Turnpike Troubadours, and Jason Isbell” is what really drew him to start. Reece said he’d describe his sound as “storytelling songs with roots in Red Dirt and southern rock.”
Who inspired Reece to start making music? He said, “My grandfather was a huge influence for me to pick up an instrument and start playing! He has always helped me whenever I need it and even plays live with me!” Now, who are some artists who have influenced Reece in the past? He said, “Ryan Bingham was the artist who made me want to pick up a guitar. Evan Felker was a huge influence for me to pick up a pen and start writing. Jason Isbell made me want to hone in and get better at live performances.”
What’s been his favorite show to play so far? Reece said, “I loved having the opportunity to play in the Bad Brads BBQ’ Stillwater Rising’ benefit festival for the fires that happened last March. It was a great event for a great cause!” Now, what’s Reece’s dream venue? He picked one of the best venues ever to exist, he said, “to play a show at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa is my ultimate goal in life! Hopefully one day I will get the chance to step on that legendary stage!”
What’s something about Reece and his band people might not expect? He said, “How diverse our live shows are. My grandfather believes the best musicians are Swiss Army knives that can play anything. So we try and bring that mentality to our live performances.” What does Reece hope people feel when they hear his music? He said, “I’m not sure I have a certain feeling I want people to experience when they listen to my music. Honestly, I just want people to take the words and melodies of my songs and craft them into something that they can relate to their everyday lives.”
What does success in music look like for Reece? He said, “Success to me is getting to headline a show at Cain’s Ballroom with my family in attendance.” How does Reece balance the music side of his life with the rest of his life? He said, “I go to school and work a part-time job, along with playing music as much as I possibly can. It’s been a great way for me to get away from the regular mundaneness of everyday life.”
Reece said his one piece of advice to someone just starting in music would be, “Just keep going. It’s better to say you gave it your all than to say you gave up!” When I asked him about new music, Reece said, “I released a song back in July called ‘Away from Tulsa’ that I’m super proud of! Check it out on all streaming platforms!”
