I feel like the way I found the music I love is a funny story. I was 14, maybe 15, and it was the middle of summer, and a new onion burger place had opened up a few miles from my house. At the time, I had a love for onion burgers, so when this place opened up, my dad took my brother and me. I couldn’t tell you the name of the place to save my life it wasn’t that good and it’s been closed for a few years now. However, I remember the theme, which is why I find this story funny. This burger place was Chinese New Year themed. So we got to the burger place, and it was only my family and the owner there. The owner was a younger Hispanic guy. I don’t remember how this came up, but he told us he had always loved the Chinese New Year, and that’s why the restaurant was themed that way. We ordered our food, and my family started talking. A few minutes later, the owners’ buddy came in, and they started talking music.
The first song he played was a Tom Russell song, so I was already interested in what else he would play. The next song he played was a song called Whole Damn Town. I don’t know why, but that song really piqued my interest. I remember walking to the bathroom and looking up the lyrics. It popped up this band from Oklahoma, the Turnpike Troubadours. Since that day, I have loved the Troubadours. I’ve collected every album on vinyl, and while listening to them, I got introduced to many other artists. If it was for the Hispanic guy in the Chinese New Year-themed onion burger place, I wouldn’t love the music I do.
