I listen to music a lot throughout my day. My top five most listened-to songs rarely stay the same. However, there’s always one that is consistently there for a few months. Then it’ll change, but today I want to share my top five most listened-to songs over the last two months and give a little reasoning behind why they are the top five songs I’m listening to right now.
Starting off, we got Kick Rocks by Jarrod Morris. This is one of Jarrod’s newer songs, been out since mid-August, and I’ve been playing it a lot. Something about this song gets me going, if I’m having a good or bad day, I put this song on, and I’m in a good mood. On the musical side, it is more rock, you get a lot of electric guitar in this song, and it kind of reminds me of a Whiskey Myers song (not lyrically, though). It’s more rock than country. I’d throw it in the cowboy rock genre. Lyrically, I love it, it’s fun to sing along with and just overall a good song.
Next, we have Songs That the Birds Sing by Noah Bowman. This one I’m not really sure how I came across, but honestly, I have loved it since I heard it. It’s one I listen to in the mornings on the way to work right about the time I see the sunrise because of the opening line in the song that says, “Tired of seeing that Oklahoma sunrise, it’s like the second time this week.” So the sunrise always makes me think of it. Lyrically, it’s a great song. I especially love the line, “I think I need someone to talk to, something other than the voices inside my head,” because when I’m driving to work, I’m normally the only one awake, and I am alone with my thoughts. Sometimes the voices or thoughts inside my head can get in the way and put me in a bad mood, but this song always brings me back down to earth. Now, as for the musical side, this is another one of the more rock songs on this list, but really, I love it, and it made me a fan of Noah’s music. Overall, this is a great song.
Third on the list, we got A Little More You by Dylan Moss & The Middle Class, which, if you don’t know them boys, I highly suggest you find out who they are, they don’t have a bad song out. On the musical side, I love this one because it’s an acoustic song with a little piano, and something about those two instruments mixed together in a song goes hard as hell for me. Now, as for the lyrical side, it’s funny because this song is talking about what he wants for Christmas, and I hate Christmas but love this song. Also, I do believe this song Dylan wrote for his then-girlfriend, now fiancée…I might be wrong. I can’t remember if it was this one or a different one. Either way, this song is one I love because of these words, “I don’t need any presents, but I could use a new pair of boots. I don’t wanna think about me, seems that’s all I ever do. One thing I know for sure that’ll kill my holiday blues is you, a little whiskey, and a little more you.” And that’s how I am, I don’t need the presents, I can always use a new pair of boots, and my girl always kills my holiday blues.
Next, we got Set Me Free by Annie Babbs. I will say this may be my favorite on the list, partially because of who sings it but also because it’s fucking amazing. This song is what I expect from a new artist, it’s got what I call “The Three R’s to a Song” real, rough, and raw. When I say real, I mean it’s something the artist wrote, it’s something they put the words to. When I say rough, I mean it’s got that OG Zach Bryan sound, it’s not going to sound amazing. It’s not going to sound like they recorded it in a high-dollar studio. However, it still sounds good. Then you got raw, it’s not truly produced, meaning it’s not tweaked, it’s not fucked with to make the artist or the music behind their voice sound like it’s the best thing to ever be recorded. It’s raw. It shows the true voice the artist has.
Now, most artists will hit two out of the three, but Annie hits all three with this one. First, it’s real, it’s something she wrote. Next, it’s rough, it’s got the sound to it where you know it wasn’t recorded in a high-dollar studio, but it still sounds good. You don’t have the guitar drowning her voice or her voice drowning the guitar, you have a perfect mix. Finally, it wasn’t messed with, it wasn’t tweaked to make anything sound better. It truly shows off her voice and what she’s capable of with her voice. I’m not sure if it’s Annie’s voice or the words or just the song as a whole, but this one hits me in a way I can’t explain. It’s truly my favorite song to come out over the past few months, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Last but certainly not least, Signed Love, Wynonna by Logan Ryan Band. This one I didn’t even find until early December 2024, yet it was my number one song last year and is currently my number one song this year. It’s also sitting at my number eight most-listened-to song of all time. It’s an addiction at this point. Musically and lyrically, it’s amazing. You got the musical side where every instrument flows together beautifully and goes between just the acoustic guitar and the full band at the right times. You got the lyrical side that tells this story about love and leaving, about falling for a girl that leaves and never chasing her, which leads to her cutting ties. It’s a song that hits deep for me because I’ve lived that story but also because it’s a damn good song, undeniably, and getting to hear it live was an experience like no other. I think it’s hard to put into words the love I have for this song, it just hits me a certain way.
These have been my top five most listened-to songs over the last two months. I know this list will change a bit from now until the end of the year, but I love the list I have right now. Thank you for reading. As always, be good to yourself, stay western, and stay tuned.
