Hello and welcome to today’s artist spotlight on Raa’ Tansiel, a Louisiana native now based out of Texas who’s been blending country, soul, and folk into something all his own. I was put onto Raa’ by Kyler from The Buzz with Katie B, and I’ve been a huge fan since. I highly recommend you check Raa’ out after this, you won’t be disappointed. But for right now, who is Raa’ Tansiel?
1. What’s your name (or your band’s name) and where are you from?
My name is Raa’ Tansiel, and I’m originally from Louisiana, now based in Texas.
2. When did you first start playing music, and what drew you to it?
I started singing in church at age 7, picked up guitar at 10, and piano at 11. By 14, I was directing choirs. Music has always felt like home—a way to process the world and connect to something deeper.
3. How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music?
Country with soul roots and folk storytelling—warm, real, and full of feeling. I blend traditional sounds with a modern heart.
4. Who or what inspired you to start making music?
Church music laid the foundation, but life itself—the highs, lows, and everything in between—is what keeps the songs coming. It also runs in the family. My grandpa, Lionel, is a staple in the Louisiana blues and zydeco industry.
5. Who are some artists (past or present) that have influenced you the most?
Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Hozier, and artists from both the gospel and country traditions. I’m drawn to voices that carry both grit and grace.
6. What’s been your favorite show or venue to play so far?
Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar in Houston stands out—it’s where I’ve grown, hosted events, and connected deeply with my audience.
7. What’s your dream venue to play at?
The Ryman Auditorium. That room holds the spirit of legends, and I’d love to add my voice to its story.
8. Have there been any major turning points in your career so far?
Releasing my EP Country In My Bones was a major moment. It helped define my sound and open doors. Also, my KPFT radio performances really expanded my reach.
9. What’s something about you or your band that people might not expect?
People are often surprised that I handle both soulful vocals and full acoustic sets solo. I also bake and vend at farmers markets!
10. What do you hope people feel when they hear your music?
Seen. Understood. Like they’re not alone in what they’re going through. I hope they hear heart in every word.
11. What does success look like for you in music?
Being able to make a living sharing honest songs, building a community around them, and never losing the joy in it.
12. How do you balance music with the rest of your life?
It’s not always easy, but I keep music close without letting it consume everything. I take care of my health and nurture my relationships—it’s all part of the journey.
13. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out in music?
Don’t chase trends. Chase truth. Find your sound, protect your joy, and play even when no one’s clapping yet.
14. Do you have any upcoming releases or projects you’re excited about?
Yes! I just released “The Sound of The Sea,” and I’m working on more original music and videos—including a new single and visuals that continue my Country In My Bones journey.
