Recently Kynny put onto this band outta western Idaho and I got the pleasure to do an artist spotlight on them! Cole Brooks Band is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. They just dropped their newest EP Sunsets & Cigarettes back in April this year, so you got a pretty new band that’s coming off their debut EP. Why wouldn’t I do a spotlight on them? But the real question is, who in the hell is the Cole Brooks Band?
1. What’s your band’s name and where are you from?
Our band name is Cole Brooks Band and we are from Western Idaho near Boise!
2. When did you first start playing music, and what drew you to it?
My love for music came at a young age being a big fan of Toby Keith! Growing up you could catch me singing at any moment, from working on the family’s farm to singing while driving the Four Wheeler. One Christmas I had asked for a guitar and Santa delivered! I got an acoustic first act guitar!
3. How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music?
Our sound is a blend of modern Americana and country rock—think heartfelt lyrics like Zach Bryan, gritty edge like Tyler Childers, and a touch of outlaw spirit. We mix acoustic storytelling with electric drive, so whether it’s a quiet backroad ballad or a full-band barn-burner, it’s always honest and raw. If you like music that feels like a long drive at sunset, or a cigarette break between heartbreaks and hope, that’s us.
4. Who or what inspired you to start making music?
We originally started as a Duo doing Karaoke at Jacobs Well in Payette, Idaho! As we did that for some time we started getting the itch for more, so we started doing little shows and making music that tells our stories!
5. Who are some artists (past or present) that have influenced you the most?
As mentioned in the past few answers Toby Keith was a big influence as a child. From there Zach Bryan’s lyrical abilities and Tyler Childers acoustic styles have really influenced our sound. We like to combine those and make our own sound!
6. What’s been your favorite show or venue to play so far?
We have played at a lot of awesome spots! Some of our favorites are Roadhouse at the Mill in Emmett, ID and Indian Creek Steakhouse Caldwell, ID with countless awesome shows at venues around us!
7. What’s your dream venue to play at?
Our dream venue is Red Rocks. We wouldn’t know how to act if we ever got that opportunity!
8. Have there been any major turning points in your career so far?
No turning points yet, but we did have Post Malone at one of our shows!
9. What do you hope people feel when they hear your music?
We hope people feel like they are not alone and that there is always someone there through life’s ups and downs. It is hard to express your true feelings as a person, and we hope our music gives a voice in good times and bad.
10. What does success look like for you in music?
We hope to one day be able to play our music all around the world, but if we can at least make life better for even one person then we are successful!
11. How do you balance music with the rest of your life?
This one’s tricky. There is not really a balance, but more of a sacrifice. Between my family, 9-5 job, and personal photography business life is busy! I wish there was a great way to say I am balancing it all, but really I miss out on things as we chase the dream!
12. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out in music?
Don’t stop, take advice, and be your own advocate. It is easy to get discouraged, not every show is going to go as planned. Don’t let minor issues become bigger than that.
13. Do you have any upcoming releases or projects you’re excited about?
We are currently back in the Studio at Den Studios Recording in Boise, ID on July 17th! We are super excited to get some more music out to everyone as we continue to grow and work towards our goals!
